I began to sing as loud as I could with as much power as I could muster up…and for once, everyone listened to me.
They had no choice although back then I thought it was just because they were so stunned that I had made a noise loud enough for someone to hear. Everybody stopped and looked up for just enough time for me to run into the circle that had formed and yank the boy to his feet. By the time everybody was out of the kind of trance I had put them in, the boy and I were running down the hallway faster than I could ever imagine a normal human to be able to run. Then again, we weren’t normal and he was doing most of the fast running. I was just along for the ride telling him to go “here” and “turn there” so we could find a place to hide. All I did was distract the crowd.
We settled for an empty Bio class and sat down behind the teacher’s desk to catch our breath.
“Who exactly are you and why were those people trying to kill you?” I yelled as I punched him in the arm. “Jeez what did you do?” I asked.
The boy looked at me and snickered “ I have that… effect I guess, on people. All I did was walk in and-”
I cut him off, “Did you run into the school? Because I’m pretty sure that coupled with the power that’s emanating off of you would instinctively send a bunch humans crazy!” I yelled as he rubbed his arm where I had punched him.
“ Okay, I ran and maybe they saw me cast a real fast spell on one of the teachers, but she was all up in my face and she wouldn’t listen to me!” I could sense his anger, which I was guessing he had problems with rising.
“Calm down, we don’t want you blowing up the frigging school.” I said.
“Screw off, you know I ‘prolly could and besides what fun would that be? Too many more dead people to add to my list. You got a name? I’m John Caleb at your service, although at your service I’m really not…” he snorted as he reached his hand out towards me.
I reluctantly reached out my hand towards his.
“Allyson Greywood, also not at your service” but had to smile when he took my hand in his. It felt almost comforting and I could still feel the power that surged through him but instead of anger mixed with it, I just felt weariness and something I hadn’t felt in a long time, though I didn’t quite know what it was.
When I looked into his eyes, I knew he wouldn’t do anything to hurt me because in truth, I held a power inside of me as well and that power wasn’t quite unlike his own.
